In the low season Sardinia offers
to its visitors numerous occasion to enjoy an holiday in this wonderful
region. In the low seasons prices are lower than in high season
and accessible to most of the people.
For some time now Sardinia has not
been merely offering sun, and beaches to the tourist; today it offers
activities allowing the tourist to visit and admire the lesser-known
regions of Sardinia. This is especially the case with archaeological
itineraries, the cultural and folklore events, Ogliastra's 'nature'
train, agricultural tourism, trekking, ecological weekends and tourism
on horseback. These are the most natural answers to life's frenetic
paces, the spreading ot pollution, and the desire to flee trom the
suffocating cities to escape to the silence of nature.
Agricultural tourism is the best way tor the outside world to encounter
the traditions, culture, history, cuisine and, above all, appreciate
the products trom Sardinian farms by enjoying velous meals or directly
purchasing their genuine, products, wholesome products.
The agricultural tourism experience lets the tourist "return
to nature" and discover (albeit in a limited way) the farmer's
everyday life and customs. Along with this option, one can follow
archaelogical, speleologicli, and architectural itineraries as well
as attend country fetes and traditional feasts.
For those lovers of "different" vacations who prefer healthy
walks in the forest instead ot sunning on the beach, Sardinia offers
62,000 hectares ot forests divided into 22 regional forests, a natural
patrimony which is extremely interesting due to the flora and fauna
that live in their original habitat.
In many ot the towns in the inner regions of Sardinia, associations
have set up tours with expert guides to visit the forests. In fact,
only by hiking along the ancient trails created to transfer flocks
of sheep across the mountains for grazing is one able to reach the
innermost protected areas ot the island.
Sardinia is a trekking paradise where it is possible to delve into
the verdant, fragrant world of the Mediterranean undergrowth or
spot splendid examples of moufflons, deer, wild boar, foxes, wild
horses, and rare species ot birds such as the Royal eagle and the
falcon.
Likewise, tourism on horseback (a cross between ecology and sport
can offer a different kind ot vacation in an uncontaminated, suggestive
environment. Of course, when visiting Sardinia in this manner one
must be a bit adventurous in spirit and especially interested in
discovering the real essence of the localities and their people.
The best way to explore the
heart ot the island is following the shepherds' trails on horseback,
along the mule tracks, or across narrow country roads. Today in
Sardinia there are about 60 horse stables where it is very simple
to rent a horse for a riding lesson or a thrilling ride through
the forests or along the enchanting beaches. One of the best-equipped
facilities is without a doubt located in Arborea on the Gulf of
Oristano, with 50 horses and covered riding grounds. From here one
can follow various itineraries through the Oristano countryside
amidst the pine forests, marsh lands, hilly beaches, and high cliffs.
And affer a few hours ride, one reaches the Giara plateau. On the
other hand, if one wants to visit the heart of the Barbagia region,
he should stop at "Su Gologone" in Oliena which is the
location where excursions to the Talana and Gennargentu mountains
start out from. Furthermore, the itineraries crossing the Sulcis
region and the Teulada mountains in the south-western part ot the
island are among the most enchanting locations to visit on horseback.
