Montiferru is a volcanic mountain range that extends north of Oristano between the Great Plain of the "Campidano" area and the west coast of Sardinia.
Bonarcado is a medieval village, which is situated on the heights of the mountain and it is one of the most interesting Montiferru examples of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia, the Byzantine sanctuary and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria are both dedicated to Santa Maria of Bonarcado.
Bonarcado today is inhabited by some 1,600 residents year round.
This area is particularly suited for the enthusiasts of nature, relax, trekking and long walks .
It offers the natural conditions, such as visiting the source of Pranos (known for high-quality mineral water), along the road to Santu Lussurgiu.
The waterfall in the valley of Sos Molinos, surrounded by a cork oak forest, green meadows and grassland, rare Mediterranean flowers, for example the Mediterranean orchid.
The waterfall is situated at an altitude of 443 meters and it is about 30 meters high, its water falls through several stages.
There are also to discover many Nuraghe, for example, Serra Crastula and Serra Ollastu, and anyone who enjoys walking can see with a little luck, the Sardinian deer and mouflons; both animals are typical of this forest.
Festivals and fairs b>
If you are a guest in Bonarcado, do not miss the traditional festivals and folk festivals. In June, the feast of cherries and in September, the festival of "Torrone" (traditional local nougat), which takes place in accordance with the most important saintly festival of Bonarcado, in honour of “Nostra Signora di Bonacattu” (in honour with our blessed Lady of Bonacattu): 18/19 September.
The celebration in honour of this saint has an important religious meaning and it is accompanied by folk performances and music. During the festival, the "Torrone" and local products of the area are offered for sale.
On 19 January takes place the feast of San Sebastian ", a festival with horse races in the village along its streets and on 08 February the feast of San Romualdo.
